I started my painting career was to make my parents proud. My parents were so happy the first time one of my pictures got used in a book.
“What’s Machiko up to these days?” their neighbors would ask.
“You know, she’s still doing her paintings,” my parents would reply.
“Oh, that’s a tough way to make a living,” the neighbors would say.
But finally they were able to say, “she’s been published!” Any their joy made me feel like I had done something good.

何かのための絵の仕事は、はじめは、親に認められるためでもありました。
さいしょに本に絵がつかわれたとき、すごく親が喜んだんです。
それまで地元では「あのマチコちゃんって今何してるの?」
「絵とか描いている」「大変ね」みたいな感じが「この本にのったの!」って
言えるようになった。すごい喜んでたから、
「お母さんたちがうれしいんだったら、やってよかった」って。
